Belgrade is set to welcome a groundbreaking aquarium in the coming years, adding a unique attraction to its rapidly evolving cityscape in preparation for Specialized EXPO 2027. Designed by the architectural studio Mitarh, the Belgrade Aquarium will be located in Ušće Park, near the iconic Hotel Yugoslavia (soon-to-be a Ritz-Carlton complex). This innovative project will blend modern architecture with the surrounding natural environment, promising an unforgettable experience for visitors.
A Visionary Design Inspired by Nature
The Belgrade Aquarium’s design concept revolves around harmony with the environment. Shaped as an earthen mound with a rooftop garden, the structure features a circular plaza at its center, serving as a public gathering point. Visitors will enter the aquarium through this plaza, descending into the structure nestled beneath the green mound. This green roof ensures the building seamlessly integrates with the park’s lush landscape, preserving the area’s ecological balance.
The aquarium will be a two-level structure, with commercial spaces on the lower level and administrative facilities above. The lower level, situated at a depth of -1.50 meters, will include shops and amenities, making it a lively hub for visitors. The rooftop garden will offer a serene space for relaxation and panoramic views of the park.
This design is part of a broader urban plan for Ušće Park, which includes other key attractions like the Natural History Museum, a Museum of 21st Century Art, and a panoramic Ferris wheel along the Main Avenue.
A Collaboration with Global Expertise
The aquarium’s design involves the expertise of Polin Aquariums, a Turkish company renowned for creating state-of-the-art aquatic facilities worldwide. This collaboration promises to deliver an immersive underwater world, showcasing marine life with cutting-edge displays and sustainable design principles.
A Highlight of Belgrade’s Urban Renewal
This project is part of Belgrade’s transformation into a cultural and tourist hub, further emphasized by its role as the host city for Specialized EXPO 2027. The aquarium will complement EXPO’s themes by showcasing the beauty and diversity of aquatic ecosystems while highlighting sustainable urban development.
Additionally, the city plans to construct a state-of-the-art dolphinarium at the EXPO site, featuring therapeutic dolphins to provide unique support for children with autism, adding another meaningful dimension to this visionary initiative.
A Must-Visit for Travelers
The Belgrade Aquarium promises to be more than just an attraction—it will be a landmark reflecting the city’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural enrichment. Whether you’re a family seeking an educational adventure or a traveler exploring Belgrade’s dynamic landscape, this upcoming addition to Ušće Park is sure to captivate and inspire.
Plan your visit to Belgrade and witness the evolution of its cityscape, where modern marvels like the aquarium will meet the timeless charm of its rich history. (source: N1)
