Beautiful Winter Festival in Belgrade: Spectacular Christmas Market Experience

On New Year’s Eve, I headed to the Winter Fairytale (Zimska bajka) Christmas festival at Belgrade Waterfront. I’ve been to similar markets in Budapest and Szeged this winter 2023/2024, and I have to say, while Hungary’s vibe was awesome, the experience in Belgrade totally takes the cake.

Update for winter 2024/2025: The much-anticipated Belgrade Christmas Market opens its doors on December 6, 2024, at the stunning Belgrade Waterfront. It is expected to run until mid-January 2025.

Belgrade 2024 Christmas market on New Year's Eve
Belgrade’s Christmas market is open from December 8, 2023 to January 8, 2024.

Nestled in the modern landscape of Belgrade’s new district, right next to the Galerija shopping mall, the Winter Fairytale shines like a gem among the towering glass buildings. They’ve turned a kids’ playground into this magical place full of festive cheer and wonder.

I say ‘Christmas market,’ although this is officially regarded as a winter festival.

As the evening sets in, the market lights up with twinkling lights, giving it this enchanting vibe that draws everyone in. Surrounded by fences, the market welcomes you with its gorgeous decorations and cozy atmosphere.

This photo was taken just before closing time, hence there are no people.

The festival offers an array of attractions: an ice skating rink, an open-air winter cinema, a children’s theatre, and a stage hosting live concerts that fill the air with music and happiness, adding to the festive vibe.

Stroll around the market stalls and you’ll find a treasure trove of shops selling all sorts of cool stuff. And let’s not forget the smell of mulled wine that floats through the air, inviting you to warm up amid the chilly weather.

Countless fun play areas await children.

There are cafes all around, perfect spots to chill, sip on hot drinks, and soak in the festive mood. And for the little ones, it’s like a dream come true! There are tons of play areas and fun stuff just for them.

Amidst the hustle and bustle, the Winter Fairytale is a fantastic getaway for families and friends. It’s a mix of fun and modernity that’s hard to beat. In the midst of Belgrade’s cityscape, it’s a canvas where you create beautiful memories against the backdrop of the holiday season.

The Winter Fairytale continues to spread its magic until January 8, 2024, so you have just a few more days to immerse yourself in this winter wonderland!
