About the Belgrade Silos
The Silos initiative was launched to revitalize an underutilized section of the riverfront, transforming a once secluded, barren area into a bustling hub of activity. The project began shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to create a space that seamlessly blends leisure, entertainment, and culture, while showcasing the stunning natural beauty of the Danube.
The impressive complex features four monumental silos, each 28 meters high and uniquely shaped like a honeycomb with a total of 64 cells. These authentic examples of brutalist architecture have been given new life through vibrant murals and a variety of organized activities.
The concept quickly gained traction and developed into the most Instagrammable spot in Belgrade. Local entrepreneurs and artists recognized the location’s potential, leading to a surge in investments and development. Today, the Silos stand as a testament to what can be achieved when creativity meets opportunity.
Art, Culture & Ultimate Chill with Stunning Sunset
The Silos are arguably the most hipster-style place in Belgrade, primarily attracting people in their twenties and thirties, though all generations can certainly enjoy the venue. The complex is a cool, creative destination by the river, featuring stunning graffiti and a variety of attractions. It’s a perfect spot whether you’re looking to relax by the water, enjoy a lively night out, or immerse yourself in cultural activities.
Visitors can enjoy a drink with a view and a spectacular sunset, choosing from a variety of seating options including chairs, sun lounges, or stair-style benches for a street vibe. Note that this hipsters’ paradise is more suited for drinks rather than dining.
It’s advisable to check the schedule ahead of your visit to see what’s happening, as attending an event can add an extra layer of excitement to your trip. The Silos host a range of activities, including festivals, workshops, competitions, exhibitions, open-air theater performances, sports activities, live concerts, conferences, children’s entertainment, and DJ sets during the day and night. The complex also includes beehives and urban gardens that promote the cultivation of medicinal and culinary herbs in city environments.
Authentic Belgrade Honey Production
Despite their proximity to the city center, the Silos serve as a natural oasis for honey bees. In addition to promoting art and culture, the Silos raise awareness about the importance of bees to our ecosystem. Although Belgrade might not seem ideal for honey bees due to air pollution, they thrive in their Dorćol home. Over 2,000 nectar-bearing plants have been planted, providing ample food in the surrounding environment and contributing to the Belgrade honey brand called “Mad Med.”
The bees’ successful development is attributed to the diverse flora in Belgrade, which blooms from late February until late September, when the flowering season ends along the Danube’s banks. The proximity to water and Kalemegdan Park has a positive impact on the bees, and their health has been confirmed by an analysis conducted by the Veterinary Faculty, validating these observations.
The Honey Garden is also a hub for children’s learning and entertainment in the Silos area. Besides school visits to the apiaries, kids can watch educational plays on environmental protection once a week during the summer season.
Climbing Center
In June 2024, the Silos became home to Belgrade’s largest climbing center. Visitors can climb the 28-meter-tall silos, which feature six carefully designed and secured routes of varying difficulty levels, catering to both beginners and advanced climbers. All routes have been certified by relevant authorities and the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade. Additionally, the holds used are of the highest international standard, the same as those used in official world competitions.
The Silos will also offer training programs and the possibility for group training sessions for sports teams, educational institutions, and corporate team-building activities. The Silos will host various competitions, urban culture and recreation festivals, and collaborate with rescue services such as fire departments.
How to Get to the Belgrade Silos
Although the Silos are not far from the city center, they are situated in an industrial area with little else around. The exact address is Dunavski kej 46.
Starting from Knez Mihailova Street or Republic Square, the Silos are about a half-hour walk away. However, the route is not particularly pleasant all the way, as the Silos are located in an isolated area by the Danube. While it is safe to walk during the day, note that it may not be an enjoyable experience at night.
Public transportation options to the Silos are limited, but they are easily reachable by car with many parking options available. You can park for free along the street as you approach the Silos, while there is also a large dedicated parking at the venue, which was also free the last time I went there (in May 2024), even though there is a ramp.
Why Belgrade Silos are a Must-Visit
The Silos have quickly become one of Belgrade’s top destinations, and for good reason. Its unique blend of entertainment, art, and culture, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Danube River, makes it a place that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Belgrade or a local looking for a new spot to explore, the Silos are sure to leave a lasting impression. The Silos are a place that truly captures the spirit of Belgrade – vibrant, welcoming, and always full of surprises.
