New Museums for EXPO 2027
In the next three years, Belgrade will introduce a new museum quarter, stretching from Sava Square to Resavska Street and Mostar Loop. This area will feature four new museums: the Historical Museum of Serbia, the Children’s Museum, the Museum of the City of Belgrade, and the relocated Nikola Tesla Museum, moving from its current location in Krunska Street to Belgrade Waterfront.
In other areas of Belgrade, the Museum of Natural History will be built at Ušće, and the Aviation Museum near Nikola Tesla Airport will be completely reconstructed.
Sava Square: The Vibrant Museum Quarter
The former main railway station building from 1884, located at Sava Square, will become the Historical Museum of Serbia. The building permit has already been obtained, and in the next few months, the contractor will be selected.
Adjacent to the railway station, the old post office building, designed by architect Momir Korunović, will be restored to its original glory. It will house the Children’s Museum, inspired by the ZOOM Kindermuseum in Vienna, and will include two new theater stages.
Today, the building bears little resemblance to its glorious past, despite being designed by the architect known as the Serbian Gaudi. Severely damaged during the Second World War, its original appearance was completely altered. However, after the ongoing reconstruction, it is poised to showcase one of the most beautiful facades in Belgrade.
Reconstruction has also begun on the Museum of the City of Belgrade on Resavska Street. Spanning approximately 17,000 square meters, it will become the largest museum in Serbia, surpassing even the National Museum.
The Nikola Tesla Museum will find its new home on Savska Street, within the building of Milan Vapa’s Paper Factory, also known as Jugošped. This move will allow the museum to exhibit its entire collection dedicated to the renowned Serbian scientist, which is currently stored in the basement.
More Museums Across Belgrade
In addition to the museum and culture quarter in the Belgrade Waterfront area, the city will also undertake a major new museum project across the Sava River. An entirely new museum building will be constructed in Novi Beograd for the Museum of Natural History, a masterpiece structure befitting a museum with over two million exhibits. Adjacent to it, a large aquarium will also be built.
The Aviation Museum near Nikola Tesla Airport is currently undergoing reconstruction in preparation for EXPO 2027. The museum, built between 1969 and 1989 according to the project by Sarajevo architect Ivan Štraus and the construction solutions of Belgrade civil engineers, is facing significant deterioration due to the lack of substantial investments since its opening.
Minister of Culture: “A significant spiritual, cultural, artistic renewal of Serbia”
As Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković revealed, Belgrade will gain over 50,000 square meters of museum space in preparation for EXPO 2027. He emphasized the substantial cultural, artistic, and spiritual renewal of Serbia, which begins with these projects aimed at showcasing Serbian culture to the world.
The Minister highlighted: “These are very important topics regarding not only the culture of Belgrade but also of Serbia. In 2027, our capital will host millions of people, and to these visitors, in addition to our hospitality, our good cuisine, and our excellent brandies and wines, we must showcase our Serbian culture in all its fullness.” (source: Danas)
