Final Days of the Old Sava Bridge, Belgrade Waterfront View
The Old Sava Bridge, built during World War II, will be demolished starting November 1, 2024, to make way for a new bridge, as part of Belgrade Waterfront project. I decided to walk across the bridge one last time and film the experience to preserve this piece of history. I intentionally left out the music so you can hear the authentic sounds of trams and traffic, providing a complete experience. The Old Sava Bridge holds a unique place in history as the only major European bridge not demolished during the German retreats in World War II. Its legendary story includes the brave act of teacher Miladin Zarić, who, during the battles for the liberation of Belgrade on October 20, 1944, cut the lit detonator wire, saving the bridge from destruction. This courageous act allowed the units of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia and the Red Army to advance and expel the occupiers.
