Belgrade will host the 2027 European Running Championships, with races at distances of 10, 21, and 42 kilometers. Over 25,000 runners are expected to participate across all three disciplines at the competition which will take place on April 17 and 18, 2027.
The Serbian capital was selected as host on the first day of the 174th European Athletics Council Meeting in Skopje, North Macedonia. Belgrade will welcome runners for the second edition of these championships, following the event’s debut in Brussels-Leuven, Belgium, on April 12-13, 2025.
The 2027 European Running Championships will be organized by the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation, with support from the City of Belgrade and the Ministry of Sports. The event will coincide with a major milestone—the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Belgrade Marathon—and will serve as an ideal prelude to the Specialized EXPO 2027, scheduled to take place in Belgrade from May 15 to August 15, 2027.
Director of the Belgrade Marathon, Darko Habuš, stated:
This is a great victory for Serbia and Belgrade, and it is an enormous honour for the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation. We have been entrusted with great responsibility, and I have no doubt that our organisational team will justify this trust through hard work and dedication.
We will do everything to meet – and even exceed – the highest organisational standards, and ensure that Belgrade hosts a true athletics spectacle. I have no doubt that we will be excellent hosts and that Serbia and our capital will send the best possible image to the world.
Belgrade has a strong recent history of staging major athletic events, standing out as the only city to have held the European Athletics Indoor Championships (2017), World Athletics Indoor Championships (2022), SPAR European Cross Country Championships (2013), and the World Cross Country Championships (2024). The 2027 European Running Championships further underscore Belgrade’s dedication to hosting major athletic events, solidifying its status as one of Europe’s leading sports destinations.
The program for the 2027 European Running Championships includes a 10km, half marathon, and marathon, with organizers expecting over 25,000 participants. Europe’s elite distance runners will compete for the title of European champion in both individual and team categories across all three races on the schedule. (source: European Athletics)
