November 3, 2025 marks an important milestone in Serbia’s air traffic history, as the first direct flight from Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, landed at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport.
The airplane, which arrived at 2:20 a.m. on Monday, was welcomed by Ana Brnabić, President of the National Assembly of Serbia, who attended the ceremonial arrival. In her speech, Brnabić emphasized that Kazakhstan is a great friend of Serbia, always standing by the country in challenging times. She expressed gratitude to Kazakhstan for supporting Serbia’s successful bid to host Specialized Expo 2027, recalling that Astana hosted the global event in 2017.
This new air route is considered a significant step in strengthening transportation, economic, and cultural ties between the two countries. The establishment of the connection was made possible through an agreement between Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The announcement of the route was first made in May 2025 in Moscow, during a meeting between the two leaders.
“This is a great day for both our countries and a success for our two presidents,” said Talgat Lastaev, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Serbia. “It creates new opportunities for tourists, travelers, and businesspeople to connect Central Asia and Europe. I believe people will grow closer.”
Regular non-stop flights between Belgrade and Astana will operate twice a week, using modern and comfortable Boeing 737 aircraft operated by SCAT Airlines, Kazakhstan’s national carrier.
Astana proudly hosted Specialized Expo 2017, themed “Future Energy”, while Belgrade will host Expo 2027 under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All.” This direct flight not only enhances regional connectivity but also symbolizes the growing partnership between two nations that share a vision of innovation, cooperation, and openness to the world.
