Belgrade Weather: Extra Hot Summers and the Best Time to Visit

Travelers often imagine Belgrade in summer as pleasantly warm, perfect for riverside walks and café terraces. But the reality may surprise you. Recent summers have been tropical, with sweltering days and nights that test even the hardiest travelers. So, when is the best time to visit Belgrade, and is summer really a good option?

Belgrade's Knez Mihailova Street in June

Over the past decade, Serbia’s climate has shifted dramatically toward a more tropical pattern. Winters are now mild with little or no snow, even on mountain peaks. The traditional in-between seasons, spring and fall, are shrinking fast, sometimes disappearing altogether, leaving the city to swing abruptly from warm autumn afternoons to mild winters, or from barely-there spring days into scorching summer heat. Summers stretch well into September, and sometimes even into November, before dropping overnight into winter.

Summer in Ada Ciganlija

For visitors, this means July and August are not the easiest months to explore Belgrade. Yes, you will find the city less crowded since many locals escape on vacation, but sightseeing in over 40°C heat (104 °F) under a blazing sun is not only uncomfortable, it can be dangerous. Unless you thrive in extreme heat or plan to spend your days lounging at Ada Ciganlija, I do not recommend these peak months. That said, if you love hot weather, the city’s nightlife, rivers, and outdoor lifestyle might feel like paradise.

The numbers confirm the trend. Summer 2025 was the third hottest in Serbia since 1951, with average temperatures around 23°C, two degrees above normal. Belgrade alone recorded 42 tropical nights, 18 more than the average. A total of five major heatwaves swept across the country between June and August 2025. And while the heat was intense, rain was scarce. It was also the fourth driest summer on record, with precipitation levels well below normal, including in Belgrade.

Spring has traditionally been the best time to visit Belgrade, but in recent years fall and even winter have become excellent options too. Although I have always loved summer, it has gradually turned into the least enjoyable season for exploring the city. Winters, once considered the least appealing time of year, are now surprisingly pleasant. On top of that, Belgrade’s Christmas market at the Belgrade Waterfront has become a highlight of the season, giving travelers one more reason to visit during winter.

Best Time to Visit Belgrade

Skadarlija

Belgrade is vibrant throughout the year, and no matter when you visit you will always find plenty to see and do. Still, some seasons tend to be more comfortable and photogenic than others, even if the weather can often be unpredictable.

  • Late April to early June: Warm and lively, ideal for sightseeing, riverside walks, and enjoying outdoor cafés.
  • September to mid-October: Mostly sunny days with milder temperatures than in summer, making it perfect for exploring the city without the discomfort of heatwaves.
  • Winter: Surprisingly mild and charming in recent years, with festive highlights like the Christmas market at Belgrade Waterfront, offering a unique seasonal experience.
