On the afternoon of November 22, 2024, Belgrade experienced its first snowfall of the season, transforming the city into a beautiful white landscape. The snow started falling in the early afternoon and continued through the evening, while it is expected to stop during the night.
The city is now blanketed in a relatively thick, wet layer of snow—the first real taste of winter this year—bringing joy to residents, especially children. This marks the beginning of what meteorologists are predicting will be Belgrade’s coldest winter in a decade.
The snowfall is causing significant challenges for drivers across Serbia, with traffic moving slowly and under difficult conditions. Several roads have experienced vehicle skidding, leading to disruptions and long queues.
Adverse weather conditions at Belgrade and some regional airports are also affecting air travel. Serbian national airline operations may face delays and potential flight cancellations due to lost airport slots.
After the unusually mild winter of 2023/2024 and a record-breaking hot summer in 2024, meteorologists are forecasting 15 snowy days for Belgrade this winter, with occasional bursts of Arctic air from the North Pole. These cold spells will bring subzero temperatures and a higher likelihood of prolonged snow cover.
For residents of Belgrade, this winter will be a welcome return to traditional snowy weather, which has been absent in recent years. Last winter was particularly warm, with little to no snow even in Serbia’s mountainous regions. However, this year, snowfall is expected to accompany the New Year festivities—a rare and exciting prospect for the city.
December is set to bring typical winter conditions, although there will be brief warm spells at the beginning and middle of the month, with daytime highs climbing to 10°C. These milder days will be followed by sharp temperature drops, bringing heavy snow by the month’s end.
With snow expected to blanket the city during the last days of December, Belgrade residents may ring in New Year’s Eve 2025 in a true winter wonderland—a sight the city hasn’t enjoyed in years.
The cold weather will intensify as the calendar turns to 2025. In January and February, significant precipitation is expected, with daily highs ranging from 0°C to 5°C. Some days could see temperatures plummet to as low as -10°C. Snow cover is predicted to last particularly after January 10, making mid-winter the most picturesque part of the season.
