Construction on the high-speed Belgrade–Budapest railway is advancing rapidly, with the line expected to be fully operational by 2026. Once completed, it will reduce travel time between the Serbian and Hungarian capitals to just two hours and 40 minutes.
A major milestone will be reached on November 24, 2024, when the railway segment between Novi Sad and Subotica in Serbia officially opens, a full year ahead of schedule. The remaining sections are anticipated to be completed within two years, allowing passengers to travel from Belgrade to Budapest in record time. The journey from Subotica to Budapest will also see a significant reduction, taking only an hour and a half.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that the train will bypass stops at the Serbia-Hungary border, thanks to a bilateral agreement that positions customs facilities in Belgrade and Budapest. Vučić noted, “We have arranged with Hungary to have customs handled in Belgrade and Budapest, so there’s no waiting at the border, allowing seamless travel between our countries.”
Built to the highest standards, the railway ensures a quiet and smooth journey, with modern and well-designed stations enhancing the travel experience.
During a test run from Belgrade to Subotica, President Vučić also shared plans to extend the railway further south, connecting Niš in southern Serbia, Thessaloniki in Greece, and eventually Istanbul in Turkey, though additional funding will be necessary to bring this ambitious project to life.
