Rail Link from Nikola Tesla Airport to Belgrade Opening in 2026

One of Belgrade’s most significant infrastructure gaps has long been the absence of a railway connection between Nikola Tesla Airport and the city center. That shortcoming is finally being addressed with the construction of a modern double-track line, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and considered one of the most important infrastructure projects tied to the upcoming Specialized EXPO 2027.

Key Features of the New Airport Railway

Branching off from the Belgrade–Novi Sad line at Zemun Polje, the new railway will link that main line with Nikola Tesla Airport and the future National Stadium in Surčin. Intended solely for passenger traffic, it will include three stops: Singidunum, Airport, and Surčin, along with a full-sized station at the stadium.

  • Length and Speed: The railway will stretch 18.3 kilometers, with trains running at speeds of up to 120 km/h.
  • Stations and Stops:
    • Singidunum – a future residential area with a large parking facility for commuters.
    • Airport – located 500 meters from Terminal 1.
    • Surčin – serving local residents.
    • National Stadium – the only full-sized station with four tracks, two island platforms, elevators, and underpasses.
  • Exclusively Passenger Traffic: The line is designed only for passenger trains, not freight, ensuring a smooth and frequent service.
  • Electrification and Modern Equipment: The entire route will be fully electrified with state-of-the-art technology.

Construction Progress

Construction of the new railway is already well underway along several sections, and travelers can expect a modern and convenient service once it opens.

At Zemun Polje, the line branches off from the existing Belgrade–Novi Sad railway. Overpasses, a viaduct, and earthworks are progressing quickly to ensure smooth connections for trains arriving and departing from the airport.

The Singidunum stop will feature two side platforms, each four meters wide, along with a large “Park & Ride” parking area. This will make it easy for commuters and visitors driving from outside the city to leave their cars and continue into Belgrade by train.

The railway route will include six major engineering structures, such as bridges and viaducts, designed to safely cross highways and local roads.

In Surčin, the railway will pass through a trench, with a viaduct carrying the local road above. The station will serve nearby residents and provide convenient access for travelers staying in the area.

Finally, the line reaches the National Stadium station, its terminus. This full-sized station is designed for large crowds, with modern amenities and accessibility features, ensuring a comfortable experience for passengers arriving for events or heading to the city.

Belgrade Airport Railway: Counting Down to 2026

The project’s main contractor is Power China, and the line will use modern city trains also ordered from China, with service expected to begin by the end of 2026.

Currently, passengers arriving at Nikola Tesla Airport rely on taxis or free public transport to reach the city. In one of our recent articles, we outlined all the available bus lines that connect the airport with Belgrade. While getting to the city isn’t overly complicated at the moment, the upcoming railway will make the journey faster, more convenient, and independent of Belgrade’s constant traffic jams.
